Help please!
AVG has picked up files infected with a virus called Trojan Horse Generic 11, which sounds pretty nasty. The infected files seem to be something to do with System Restore, and AVG says it can't find them to "heal" them. I've transferred the files to the AVG Virus Vault where they're supposed to be quarantined, and therefore safe. I did think about downloading a "clean-up" gizmo, but decided against it as I wasn't sure about the safety of the site.
All thoughts and suggestions most gratefully received!

.
If the files are in the virus vault no need to worry about them.

It is quite likely that this is in fact a false positive anyway, probably associated with a bit of software you installed then removed again.

If you are wanting to try something in addition to AVG I recomend downloading and running Malwarebytes - it is free, harmless and very effective against some of the nastier viruses - but really I do not think you have anything to worry about.

Thank you Mr. Admin! I feel a lot better now. :) And nothing odd seems to have happened with bank accounts.
I did indeed download and then remove something, so that could be the likely source. Will try the malware-thing.
Thanks again.
BJ :)

This is an action of last resort. The problem is that while you can save your documents to memory stick (no need to use CDs any more) you cannot save your installed programmes, drivers, registry settings etc in the same way. (Unless you use a disk imaging programme such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image).

Modern anti-viruns and anti-spyware/malware programmes will generally find and destroy most threats, although a few tricks may be necessary in order to get them to run. New out is Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free and seems to be as good as or better than some of the paid-for AV suites.

Please do all continue to post computer-related problems here and I will help whenever I can - as will others, there are more than me who read this who have 'the knowledge' and a bit of computing nous. Don't rush off to implement any old advice such as that given above however, as if you are not sure what you are doing you could end up with a dead lump of plastic and silicon instead of a PC.
